AI Cleans Up After Itself: Amazon’s New Carbon-Capturing Tech
Can the AI powering our data centers also clean up the environmental mess it creates? Amazon’s latest pilot suggests it can.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is partnering with Orbital Materials to trial a groundbreaking AI-designed material that captures carbon emissions from data centers. Described as a "sponge at the atomic level," the material selectively absorbs CO2, offering an efficient alternative to traditional carbon offsets.
While adding a modest 10% to the hourly GPU cost for AI training, it’s far cheaper than other carbon-reduction methods. This innovation aligns with Amazon’s 2040 net-zero goal while addressing the rising energy and water demands of AI development.
Orbital’s AI-driven process doesn’t stop at carbon capture. It aims to tackle water usage and cooling needs in data centers.
