AI’s Fluorescent Revolution: EvolutionaryScale Shakes Up Protein Design
Can AI evolve faster than nature? EvolutionaryScale’s new protein design model suggests it might.
Ex-Meta scientists at EvolutionaryScale have debuted one of the largest AI models in biology, capable of designing new proteins, including fluorescent molecules. The AI, named ESM3, has shown its prowess by creating a new variant of green fluorescent protein (GFP), an essential tool in biotechnology.
After synthesizing 88 designs, one faintly glowing protein was further refined by the AI, leading to several variants as bright as natural GFP. With $142 million in new funding, EvolutionaryScale aims to leverage this technology for drug development and sustainability, pushing the boundaries of programmable biology.
How might AI-driven protein design transform medicine and sustainability in the near future?
