The Free Our Feeds initiative, supported by Wikipedia’s Jimmy Wales and other notable figures, aims to protect the AT Protocol powering Bluesky and create an open social media ecosystem.
The movement highlights the dangers of billionaire-controlled platforms like Musk’s X and Zuckerberg’s Meta, pointing to issues like disinformation and mental health impacts. With a goal of $30 million, the group plans to establish an independent foundation, fund developers, and secure infrastructure to prevent monopolized control.
Mastodon, a decentralized social media site, is also transitioning its platform to nonprofit ownership, aligning with the call for user-driven, independent networks.
