Remember when Google helped you find information instead of deciding for you? That era might be over. [AI](https://www.thedigitalspeaker.com/ai-keynote-speaker/) Mode is here, and it’s not just answering your questions, it’s replacing search itself.

Google’s Gemini 2.0 is reshaping search, replacing traditional web links with AI-generated responses. The new AI Mode, currently available to Google One AI Premium users, eliminates organic search results entirely.

Instead, Gemini synthesizes answers using its own “reasoning” and web summaries. While Google insists this won’t replace web discovery, it’s clear AI is taking center stage:

- AI Mode removes traditional search results in favor of direct AI answers.
- Web discovery could shift from exploration to algorithmic curation (which is problematic, to say the least).
- Only premium subscribers can currently test AI Mode, hinting at high costs.

As search becomes AI-first, will we lose control over what we see? How do we ensure AI remains a tool for discovery, not a gatekeeper of knowledge?
