Moon-Based Data Centers: Genius or Sci-Fi Fantasy?
If your data is floating in the cloud, why not take it all the way to the Moon? Lonestar Data Holdings thinks that lunar data centers are the answer to cybersecurity, natural disasters, and geopolitics.
Last week, SpaceX launched a mini data center to the Moon, marking the first step in off-world data storage. Lonestar Data Holdings believes the lunar surface offers security benefits, avoiding earthly risks like cyberattacks, climate disasters, and political interference.
But the challenges are clear: 1.4-second latency rules out real-time applications. Maintenance is impossible; there’s no IT team on the Moon. High launch costs make large-scale deployment uncertain.
Despite these hurdles, Lonestar is pushing ahead, planning data centers in lunar lava tubes and orbit.
Storing data on the Moon solves some problems but creates new ones. Is this the future of resilient storage, or are we just moving server racks into space for the spectacle? Would your business trust a data center 384,000 km away?
