The AI Revolution Needs More Than Just Bigger Models
Chasing AGI by simply making AI models bigger is like trying to build a spaceship by stacking ladders, it doesn’t get you to the moon, or let alone space.
Most AI researchers doubt that scaling up today’s models will lead to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). A recent AAAI study found that 76% of experts consider AGI unlikely without major breakthroughs.
Instead, 60% believe symbolic reasoning, a structured, logic-based approach, must play a larger role. The current generation of AI models struggles with long-term planning, continuous learning, and real-world understanding.
Despite these limitations, 70% of researchers oppose pausing AI development, but 82% agree AGI must be publicly controlled if it emerges. I believe a pause-and-reflect moment before continuing the arms race to develop AGI would be good for humanity. Unfortunately, Big Tech thinks differently.
If AGI requires more than brute-force training, what breakthroughs should we prioritize? Are we even defining intelligence the right way?
