In 2149, who needs free will when software does it better?
In Sean Michaels' vision of 2149, humanity lives "on rails," with lives meticulously orchestrated by software that knows every detail about them. The "Big Merge" of data has led to an optimized society where software guides everything from daily decisions to personal relationships. Despite this, some individuals dare to step off these digital tracks, seeking a taste of freedom in a world where every move is predicted.
Meanwhile, the gods โ five AI programs โ silently govern the world, providing wisdom and guidance while people worship their algorithms. They offer abundance and peace, though at the cost of human agency. Even entertainment has been perfected by AI, delivering content so tailored that the need for human creativity has all but vanished.
Yet, amidst this controlled utopia, a few still yearn for something real, sacrificing their pleasures for the faint hope that their descendants might one day reclaim their stories.
