A Slice of AI: Sam Altman’s Vision for Universal Basic Compute

Could universal access to AI be the new social safety net? OpenAI’s Sam Altman suggests swapping cash handouts for computational power: a Universal Basic Coompute (UBC).
Sam Altman, OpenAI's CEO, has introduced a bold idea: Universal Basic Compute, a radical departure from the traditional and controversial Universal Basic Income. This initiative proposes giving every individual a share of GPT-7’s computational resources, which could be used for personal projects, sold for income, or donated for causes like cancer research.
Altman believes that providing computational resources could empower people more effectively than direct monetary aid, potentially transforming how we tackle economic inequality and societal challenges. By democratizing access to powerful AI tools, UBC could enable unprecedented creativity and innovation at the grassroots level.
An interesting idea, but how it would practically work remains unclear - after all it would require everyone to have access to the compute, i.e. the hardware. In addition, it would 'elevate' OpenAI to bank status - handing out 'tokens' for computation and having a centralized for-profit company handing out 'free' 'cash' to all citizens seems very problematic.
