AI Isn’t That Smart, Yet: Why GenAI is Just the Beginning
Generative AI might dominate headlines, but it only serves a fraction of real-world needs.
According to Gartner’s Erick Brethenoux, we’re currently in the "brute force" phase of AI, relying on specialist hardware like GPUs because the software isn’t yet efficient. Brethenoux argues that once AI development matures, vanilla hardware will handle most workloads, making GPUs irrelevant.
The hype surrounding generative AI distracts from more practical AI applications like predictive maintenance or rule-based systems, where machine learning already contributes to business outcomes. Brethenoux stresses that organizations shouldn’t be seduced by generative AI’s glitzy promises when composite AI, which blends generative models with traditional AI, delivers faster, cost-effective results.
