LinkedIn’s AI Opt-Out: Are You Training the AI That Will Replace You?

What’s worse than your personal data being used without permission? Finding out it’s helping AI take your job.
LinkedIn’s recent OptOut scandal highlights a growing issue: generative AI (GenAI) models using personal content to train without clear user consent. While companies have long trained AI with user data, GenAI introduces new complexities.
Once your data has trained an AI model, removing it is nearly impossible — like trying to extract sugar from a baked cake. Legal frameworks like GDPR give users the right to request data deletion, but these laws weren’t designed for GenAI, which can unintentionally "leak" your content during outputs.
LinkedIn's opt-out process feels more like a dark pattern, nudging users into choices they wouldn’t knowingly make. With the rise of AI, this could be the start of an uncomfortable trend where user content is leveraged without adequate control or compensation.
