Meta’s Touchy Feely Bots: AI Gets Physical

Are robots about to master touch better than we do? With Meta’s latest AI tools, we might just find out.
Meta has launched new AI tools to enhance robots' tactile perception, dexterity, and human collaboration. These include Sparsh, a model that provides touch sensitivity using self-supervised learning, trained on over 460,000 tactile images.
Sparsh improves performance by 95.1% compared to traditional models. Then there's Digit 360, a finger-shaped sensor with 8 million taxels, capturing touch details across multiple modalities, which could impact fields like medicine and virtual reality.
Finally, Digit Plexus integrates tactile data from various sensors, facilitating the development of versatile robotic hands. Beyond these, the PARTNR benchmark evaluates human-robot collaboration using a simulated environment with 100,000 tasks to test AI planning and reasoning skills.
With AI evolving beyond screens to real-world interaction, could these advancements redefine how robots participate in daily life?
