In the grand tradition of irony, OpenAI is accusing China’s DeepSeek of “distilling” ChatGPT. Essentially using OpenAI’s outputs to train its own model. This is the same OpenAI that once hoovered up half the internet without asking, now crying foul because someone else might have done the same to them.
If OpenAI succeeds in blocking “distillation,” does that mean only the first pirate gets the treasure? Or are we just watching AI capitalism eat itself? What’s next—an LLM arms race over who stole what first?
