Watt’s Up: Clean Power Quietly Takes the Lead
While everyone was arguing about AI, elections, and trade wars, renewables quietly took over nearly a third of global electricity. Guess who didn’t notice?
Last year, renewables hit a historic milestone: 32% of global electricity, up from 30% in 2023. Wind, solar, and hydro added 858 TWh, more than the UK and France use annually.
As AI, EVs, heat pumps, and a warmer planet drive up demand, it’s encouraging to see clean energy keeping pace. Coal dipped to 34% and gas held steady at 22%. Even amid tariff-fueled trade tension and climate-driven surges in cooling demand, the transition continues.
- Heatwaves added 208 TWh of demand
- AI and EV growth added 0.7%
- Solar and wind remain fastest growers
I see this as proof that coordinated global effort can deliver real change. But will nations double down on this momentum, or retreat behind fossil-fuelled fears?
