Emotion AI: The Empathy That Isn’t?

The rise of AI in business is moving beyond just automating tasks to something more ambitious—and possibly more problematic: understanding human emotions. Dubbed "Emotion AI," this technology aims to enable AI bots to detect and interpret emotions through visual, audio, and other inputs, promising a future where customer service, sales, and even internal team dynamics could be managed by emotionally aware machines.
However, there's a catch: human emotions are notoriously difficult to read, even for humans. Past research has debunked the idea that emotions can be reliably inferred from facial expressions alone.
Moreover, regulations like the EU's AI Act are already pushing back against emotion-detection systems, raising questions about the ethical implications and practical effectiveness of Emotion AI in the workplace. Are we setting up AI for failure, or is there a future where machines truly "get" us?
