Empathy in Pixels: Can VR End Prejudice?

If walking in someone else’s shoes could reduce bias, why aren’t more of us lacing up VR headsets?
Virtual reality (VR) offers a groundbreaking way to combat prejudice by letting users embody diverse perspectives. From experiencing life as a wheelchair user to interacting with avatars from stigmatized groups, VR fosters empathy and challenges bias.
However, poorly designed experiences risk reinforcing stereotypes rather than dismantling them. As research grows, half of related studies were published post-2020, the potential for VR in addressing systemic prejudice becomes clearer.
