AI Experts Say Trust Us—The Public Says: ‘No Thanks.’

AI optimism is soaring, if you’re an expert. But for most people, it still feels like Silicon Valley is pushing autopilot on a plane no one asked to board.
A new Pew study reveals a sharp divide: 76% of AI experts think AI will benefit them personally, but only 24% of the public agrees. Most Americans think AI will harm them (43%) or aren’t sure.
Nearly everyone wants more control, 59% of the public and 46% of experts. But only 14% of Americans and 23% of experts feel they have any. Confidence in regulators and companies is low across both groups.
Experts are more optimistic on jobs, medicine, and efficiency, but admit risks like bias, impersonation, and misinformation are growing. The real gap isn’t technical. It’s trust.
