We’re entering the “fuck it” era of AI-generated content — where truth is optional, but political impact is everything. In the wake of Hurricane Helene, AI-generated images depicting suffering have gone viral, despite being fake.
Even worse, people know they’re fake and simply don’t care. Take Amy Kremer, a political figure who acknowledged the falsehood of an image yet embraced it because it symbolized “the trauma” she wanted to highlight.
This dangerous shift in digital culture undermines the very essence of truth. AI slop, created for virality and driven by both politics and profit, is increasingly muddying online discourse.
We are now mixing AI-generated disinformation with real tragedies, creating an internet where separating fact from fiction feels impossible. Are we ready to let AI reshape not just the future, but reality itself?
