Stop Playing Checkers: China’s Winning Chess

America’s, and Europe's, China policy is dangerously outdated, are we setting ourselves up to lose?
We’ve misread China’s ambitions, trapped by outdated fears. Tom Friedman argues America’s bipartisan hostility toward China risks our future prosperity. The U.S. falsely assumes China can’t innovate independently, yet Chinese giants Xiaomi and Huawei rapidly transitioned from phones to world-leading smart vehicles.
While Washington debates tariffs, China builds robotic “dark factories” and campuses for tens of thousands of AI researchers. To navigate the China challenge effectively, I see three critical steps for U.S. leaders:
- Embrace selective openness, not blind hostility.
- Strategically bring Chinese tech know-how to America, and Europe.
- Partner globally instead of acting alone.
