A groundbreaking study using an AI-powered "brain clock" has revealed that factors like where you live, socioeconomic status, and even gender inequality can accelerate brain aging. Led by neuroscientist AgustĂn Ibáñez, the research analyzed brain scans from over 5,300 participants across 15 countries, finding that brains in Latin America — one of the most socioeconomically unequal regions — age faster than those in wealthier nations.
Women in countries with high gender inequality, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean, also showed larger brain-age gaps. The study underscores the influence of environmental and societal factors on brain health, suggesting that addressing structural inequalities could be key to improving global brain health.
